Barceloneta , a charming seaside neighborhood located next to the Born district and the Olympic Port, just 15 minutes walk from the famous Las Ramblas, is one of the most charismatic areas of Barcelona. It was virtually uninhabited until the mid-eighteenth century. Due to its proximity to the sea, the fishermen and people related to port activities were the first to settle in this part of the city.
Currently, the environment of this district has changed a lot; it became lively and crowded area, especially in summer due to its beach, the nearest one from the city centre and amazing both day and night, when they open the bars and music bars installed in the same sand where you can go to dinner or a drink until the wee hours of the morning. The walk along La Barceloneta's narrow streets, full of magic and history, will transfer you back to the past centuries and conquer you with its traditional balconies, all kind of shops, warehouses, bars, restaurants and its cosmopolitan marine environment still smelling of salt.
From the tourist interest places is important to emphasize Palau del Mar which houses Cataluña History Museum, displaying a permanent exhibition on the history of Catalonia, from prehistoric times to its industrialization, the era of dictatorship or democratic moment today. In addition, the terrace of the café is a great lookout over the neighborhood and the port.
Very close to the museum, stands the Clock Tower, the oldest building in the area, which served as the lighthouse of the port until the mid nineteenth century.
La Barceloneta also communicates with the Port Vell, where you can find a busy commercial center MareMagnum with shops of all types, restaurants and pubs, the IMAX (the most modern cinema in the city, where you can see movies on Imax technology, Omnimax and 3D) and the Aquarium, the largest one in Europe, where you can find the huge number of Mediterranean marine life.
The sunset is the best time to have a walk through Barceloneta's seafront, the modern boulevard with nice atmosphere full of joy and entertainment. It is packed with bars and restaurants serving fresh food caught in the same day where you can also enjoy the best rice dishes. Most of the luxury seafood restaurants are located here, between them is important to highlight the following ones: Salamanca, Can Majo, 7 puertas, suquet de almirall, Torre d'alta Mar etc, famous for its typical fresh fish dishes, tapas and cañas (glass of draft local beer).
The best way to reach La Barceloneta is using the municipal buses or Subway (Line 4). The nearest stop is Barceloneta. Really nice place to spend a day in a pleasant sailor area full of sun and emotion.
