The Gothic Quarter is the most antique district of Barcelona, founded in the Roman era. Today it represents the historic centre of the city and many of the emblematic buildings are located here: The Palace of Generalitat, the City Council, The Cathedral, the Royal Palace. Also you can find many ancient churches (Mercé, Santa Ana, Sant Just etc) and pleasant typical squares (plaça Reial, Plaça Sant Jaume, Plaça del Angel, Plaça del Rei, Plaça de la Catedral, Plaça del Pi, etc.)
Despite the changes suffered during the Middle Ages, there are still some traces of Barcelona's Roman origins: The Roman Walls, Roman Gate, Roman Tower.
The narrow winding streets create a maze, and that is why to get to your destination may take time. Its recommended always look up and around in order not to miss the best facades of the buildings.
This district is just next to Las Ramblas, the most famous street of Barcelona and represents a marvelous mixture of the historic with the contemporary, one of the favorite places for the tourists due to its unique ambience, night life, shops of souvenirs, entertainment etc.

From the medieval monuments is important to highlight Barcelona Cathedral (the most important works of Spanish Gothic Architecture, 1298 - 1454), Plaça de Sant Jaume (the political and social center of the city, where you can find the two buildings of the most important Catalan administration: la Generalitat of Catalonia and Barcelona City Council), Barcelona History Museum, where you can see the history from the time of the Romans, or from its founding to the present through photographs, models and ancient writings.

Plaça Reial is the liveliest square, full of bars, restaurants and excellent ambience for all ages. Located down the left hand side of Las Ramblas, it is the only arcaded square of the city, which gives it character and make it unique, both locals and tourists coincide here enjoying its unbelievable establishments and joyful night life.

You can't miss the pearl of Spanish Modernism Palau de la Musica Catalana, the masterpiece of Domenec I Montaner, which captivate all the visitors with its style and charm.
Its highly recommended to walk along the typical Gothic street as are: calle Ferran, calle Avinyon, calle del Bisbe, calle del Call, Via Laietana etc, take pleasure of the historic facades, nice terraces of the National or International food restaurants, Irish bars, cocktails, typical tapa bars, all kind of shops, boutiques and lots of entertainment places this bohemia district offers to the visitors.

The Gothic Quarter is a perfect destination to get acquainted with the old Barcelona and spend pleasant time in the unusual historic atmosphere. The best way to reach this district is using municipal buses or the subway line 4 (Urquinaona and Jaume I stops) or Line 3 (Liceu and Drassanes stops).
