A popular day trip out of Barcelona for tourists and residents alike is a quick trip along the coast to Sitges, a pretty coastal town renowned for great beaches and a vibrant nightlife.
The gay capital of Spain, Sitges is famous for its spectacular Mardi Gras carnival where colourful fancy dress costumes run riot as the whole town celebrates. Also attracting increasing numbers of visitors is its Film Festival. However, most day trippers to Sitges are happy to enjoy the beaches and delicious seafood on offer by the waterfront.
The town tends to get extremely full in the summer months, particularly in July and August when it attracts a gay crowd from across Europe, then returning to being more family orientated in September. If you do plan to stay overnight in the summer and return to Barcelona the following day, it is highly recommended to book accommodation in advance.
