A trip to the Roman ruins at Tarragona is a popular day trip for visitors to Barcelona with an interest in the ancient world. Situated 100km south of Barcelona Tarragona is famous for having the best number of Roman ruins in Spain.
The city had various functions in Roman times, from initial beginnings as a military fortress to later status as a provincial and administrative centre and there are ruins from various types of buildings to reflect this. Highlights worth visiting include the amphitheatre, the magnificent aqueduct, the walls and the 'Tower of the Scipios', admiring the antique street names and visiting the Museum of Archaeology.
Tarragona is also very close to Port Aventura, the largest theme park in Europe and many of the popular beach resorts of the Costa Daurada.
