The huge triumphal arch near the Born district, known simply as the Arc de Triomf, is one of the few surviving structures of the 1888 Universal Exhibition. It was original conceived as the monumental entrance to the whole exhibition and now is at the head of a wide promenade that leads down to the peaceful Parc de Ciutadella.

The arch was built by Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas using brickwork in the Moorish mudéjar style, giving a clear link back to Spanish history and ensuring its distinction from other celebrated triumphal arches found European cities. Two stone friezes are set against the red brickwork, one depicting a representation of the city of Barcelona welcoming visitors, and the second a prize giving ceremony.BarcelonaŽs coat of arms crowns the arch, but the arms of all other 49 provinces can also be found; the rather imposing structure is also further softened by the presence of 12 female sculptures signifying fame.
