For many visitors to Spain experiencing the local products is of the utmost importance, and if trying some of the country’s finest wine sounds tempting, then a trip to the nearby region of Penedès should not be missed! Most famous for cava, a white or rosé sparkling wine, high-quality reds and whites are also produced, and a wine-tasting visit to one or more of the vineyards is a thoroughly worthwhile experience.
Penedès is located less than an hour south of Barcelona and the centre for the local wine industry is the small town of Vilafranca, closely rivalled by Sant Sadurní d´Anoia. In Vilafranca visitors can enjoy a trip to the wine museum but the real highlight is a visit to one of the many vineyards nearby, the most famous being the Torres vineyard. Here guests can enjoy an hour long tour including; a video projection, a train ride through the vines and cellar and a delicious glass of wine at the end!
Sant Sadurní d´Anoia is Vilafranca´s close rival and the centre of the cava industry in the region. There are many well-known brands to be visited here, such as Freixenet, although if pressed for time the perhaps the most worthwhile are the Codorníu headquarters. Many of the buildings here were designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, second only to Gaudí in creating works in the exciting modernist (art nouveau) style ensuring that Cavas Codorníu was declared a historical monument in 1976.Here visitors can enjoy a trip to the cellars, stroll through the gardens, visit the museum and yes, taste some of that cava
Travelling to the Penedès region is possible by train, there are departures twice an hour from the main Barcelona train stations and including Passeig de Gracia/Sants and it is the Barcelona-Sant Sadurní d´Anoia route. For an extended visit to many vineyards it is really necessary to travel by car.
