This beautiful open space is one of the best parks in Barcelona and an ideal place to go for a stroll with children. Originally the site of a military fortress, the citadel or ´Ciutadella´ was a hated symbol of central government and Barcelona residents were overjoyed to see its destruction in 1869 to make way for a public park.

Whilst still under development the park was then elected to host the 1888 Universal Exhibition and many of the Exhibition’s structures can still be seen today. As well as the Zoo, the park is host to three museums; the Museum of Geology, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Natural History Museum which is housed in the ´Castell de Tres Dragons´, a mock medieval castle that served as the restaurant during the Exhibition.

Filled with exotic plants and trees from around the world, the park also has a boating lake and a large waterfall which pays homage to the Trevi Fountain. There are sculptures dotted about the park, children will particularly love the life size mammoth!
