One of the most explosive traditional fiestas celebrated in Barcelona is San Juan and it is fair to say this is definitely the least peaceful night of the year! The festival is held on the night of 23rd June until dawn on 24th, (the official holiday) and is a celebration of the height of the summer and St John´s saint day.

Throughout the city bonfires are set up to burn through the night, there are firework displays all over town and loud bangers (´petardos´) are thrown relentlessly until the sun comes up.Most of the city heads down to party on the beach with jumping in the sea (clothing optional) one of the traditions.Watching the sun rise on the new day from the beach is considered a vital Barcelona experience and is a wonderful sight to be shared with fellow partygoers, even if everyone is partially deaf from the bangers by this stage in the proceedings. As with most festivals in the region, there is a special cake for the day; on this occasion it is coca de Sant Juan (a cake with crystallized fruit) that fills the bakery windows for weeks beforehand.
