The one tram fact most people associate with Barcelona is that the architect Gaudí was knocked down by one, but what is less well known is that the city currently has one of the most modern tram systems in Europe.

Trams have been heralded in many quarters as the best city transport system for the future. They have a huge range of advantages; they are safe, punctual, fast and, increasingly important in this day and age, environmentally friendly. The Barcelona tram system is particularly advanced, with special feature such as audiovisual information in every carriage, real time information at stops and accessibility for all as there are no stairs or escalators.

The tram routes form part of the Barcelona metropolitan area transport network which includes the metro, buses and FGC so tickets for all of these are also valid on the trams. There are 5 tram lines currently operating, although plans for expansion are continually underway.

T1, T2, T3 – these three lines cover areas running from the Francesc Macia roundabout on Diagonal out of the city centre to outer lying areas such as L´Hospitalet de Llobregat, Cornellà de Llobregat and Sant Felieu de Llobregat. These are not areas generally visited by tourists but the trams form an important lifeline into the centre for residents and students travelling to and from the Zona Universitária.

T4, T5 – these two lines operate in the north of the city, from the Olympic Village through the Glories market by the Agbar Tower and on to the Forum and will certainly be a significant means of transport to the new 22@ district when completed. The lines run out of the city to Sant Adria de Besos and Badalona.
