Visitors to Barcelona with time to explore Catalunya should not miss Vall de Boi, one of the most picturesque places in the entire country.Located on the edge of the Pyrenees in the Alta Ribagorçana region, the valley is famous for being one entrance into the stunning Aiguastortes National Park, its ancient Romanesque churches, excellent skiing and the thermal waters at Caldes de Boi.

There are nine Romanesque churches in Vall de Boi which are remarkably well preserved and some of the best examples of the style in Spain. All were built between the 11th -14th centuries from local materials (stone, slate and wood) and are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, although many of the murals are now in MNAC in Barcelona for their protection. The best preserved church is probably that at Sant Climent de Taüll but all can be visited on the ´Romanesque Route´ organised by the Romanesque Centre in Erill la Vall which runs guided tours during Easter and the summer months.Outside of these times of year tours can be organised by booking in advance. The churches are open from 10am-2pm and 4pm-7pm (until 8pm in the summer).

Transport

The best way to explore the region is by car, but it is possible to travel there by coach.Coaches are run by the Alsina Graells company and leave Barcelona from Estaciò de Nord coach station.(wwwl alsinagraells.com)
