BARCELONETA

For fun loving beach worshipers Barceloneta is the perfect district of Barcelona for a holiday; it is close to the centre of town, has plenty of bars and restaurants and forms the beginning of the city´s seven kilometres of beaches.Previously considered an area for down and outs, the sand being a good option for some undisturbed sleep, it is now a popular and vibrant part of town, particularly busy in the months of summer revelry.

The district has its origins in the 18th century, when Philip V ordered the construction of the Ciutadella fortress in order to punish the Catalans for uprising against Spain. The people living on the site selected for the fortress (now the CiutadellaPark) had their homes demolished and were made to leave, and the new area of Barceloneta (´Little Barcelona´) constructed to house them. The streets are extremely distinctive as the new barrio was built on a grid system and each road is narrow with extremely tall buildings.

Having such a splendid seaside location it will come as no surprise to read that Barceloneta was traditionally an area of fisherman and it is still the best part of town to visit for some delicious seafood today. The principal road is Joan de Borbo, a wide paved street lined with restaurants and cafés facing Port Vell, and if you don´t mind the menu-wielding waiters vying for your attention and the occasional pan-pipe ensemble you can fill up your stomach with fish of the freshest order. The restaurants closest to the marina, backing onto the large Museu d´Història de Catalunya in the Palau de Mar, are also highly recommendable.

The beach at Barceloneta (called Barceloneta or San Sebastián) is fine for a quick sun-tanning session and ideally located close to the city, but fearsomely crowded in summer and the water often less than clean.Concern over sand erosion has also led the authorities to deposit large cubes of concrete just off the shore in order to form a dam; a device that may be practical but rather unattractive. However, it is great for beach games, soaking up some quick rays, feeling your toes in the sand, and ideally located for easy access to the better beaches up the coast.

Other attractions in the area include the newly redeveloped food market, the Passeig Marítim running along the seafront to the Olympic Port for roller-blading, cycling or jogging, open air sculptures such as Rebecca Horn´s towering Wounded Star, and the chiringuito beach bars serving up cocktails till after dark!

Metro: Barceloneta (L4), Ciutadella Villa Olimpica (L4)
