The Mercat de Sant Josep is more commonly known as La Boqueria. It stands on the site of St.Josep´s convent, which burnt down in 1835. It is situated about halway down Las Ramblas, and with it grand enterance and ´modernista´ rooftop you can´t miss it. The metal framework was constructed in 1914, but the existence of a market on this site goes back to the 13th century.
This is a food market market, selling local and international produce in a huge 6000sqm space with over 300 stalls. You will find an amazing selection of fruits and vegetables, fresh and cured meat, fish and seafood, bread and confectionary, oil and vinegar, cheese and wine. Many of the stalls sell food and drink that you can enjoy whilst walking around the market, as well as ingredients to take home with you.

A great experience is to go for lunch or dinner at one of the Boqueria´s market cafes. Each one serves freshly cooked food prepared with seasonal products bought from the market itself.
