This area of Barcelona is currently enjoying its status as the most fashionable part of town, and it is certainly irresistibly attractive. Defined by Via Laietana on one side and the Parc de la Ciutadella on the other, it is a maze of narrow streets with cafés, restaurants and trendy boutiques to be found at every turn.In the past it was considered off limits for being impoverished and crime-ridden, its new appearance has instead drawn criticism for being besieged by rich foreigners who have inflated the prices and are diluting its Catalan spirit.Despite this it is an undeniably delightful place and many visitors favourite part of the city, and it and it is still possible to find cheap tapas and traditional Catalan strongholds that have been in place for years.

The focal point of the area is Santa Maria del Mar, a wonderfully harmonious gothic cathedral often preferred by visitors to Santa Lucia cathedral found by Las Ramblas.At the east end of Santa Maria there is a lovely little square where you can sit outside to enjoy a glass of wine on a summer’s eve, whilst at the west end is the Passeig del Born.This is a tree lined pedestrian street with bars, restaurants and delicatessens that runs between the cathedral and a currently deserted building that used to be the old market.
Another essential sight found in this district is the Museu Picasso (C/Montcada 15-23) which focuses on the artist’s stylistic development during his formative years rather than his cubist paintings..The collection is displayed across what were originally palaces, as are the displays in the Museu Tèxtil (C/Montcada 12) in the same road.This has a range of exhibits including medieval textiles and a collection of baroque to 20th century fashions. |

Aside from meandering through its atmospheric streets, many visitors are drawn to the area for its large quantity of restaurants and bars, many of outstanding quality.A wide range of international cuisine can be found here, longstanding Catalan wine and cava bars and imaginative tapas restaurants. |
