The Eixample Dret (right Eixample) principally encompasses the roads from Passeig de Gracia to Passeig de Sant Joan, and then beyond to incorporate the Sagrada Familia district. It is considered one of the most exclusive parts of the city and has the shops, restaurants and hotels to prove it; those streets beyond Passeig de Sant Joan are slightly less upmarket but it is still a very pleasant and safe part of Barcelona.
Passeig de Gracia is the heart of the entire Eixample district and holds such major attractions as Gaudí´s Casa Batllò and La Pedrera amongst other Modernist wonders.Gaudí´s unfinished masterpiece, Sagrada Familia, is 10 blocks away from Passeig de Gracia, and as one of the symbols of the city it would be a crime to come to Barcelona without paying it a visit.Even those only vaguely interested in architecture will be impressed and the views from the top of the towers are outstanding.Close by to Sagrada Familia is another exceptional Modernist building that is frequently overlooked by visitors drawn to its more famous neighbour.Located at the top of Avenida Gaudi, a lovely boulevard running directly from Sagrada Famila, is the Hospital de Sant Pau by Domenech i Muntaner.

The stunning hospital complex forms the largest group of Catalan Modernist buildings and is still in functional use today; if you have to be ill anywhere it would undoubtedly be the most beautiful place to do so.One of the more controversial buildings in the Dret is the Monumental bullring.Barcelona is essentially an anti-bullfighting city (bullfighting is considered ´Spanish´ and not ´Catalan´) but the bullring continues to be in use on Sundays during April-September.However, anti-centralist Spain spirit and dwindling spectator numbers are conspiring to make 2007 the last year of bullfighting in the city; the splendid Modernist bullring may then be used to house the Encants Vells flea market.

There are a number of unusual museums in the Eixample Dret, including the Museu Egipci (EgyptianMuseum), Museu del Perfum (PerfumeMuseum) and, on a somewhat macabre note, the Museu de Carrosses Fúnebres (Museum of Funeral Carriages).Something for everyone, then. The best market is the Mercat Concepció, located on Calle Aragò between Calle Bruc and Calle Girona.Restaurants tend to be of high quality with prices to match, with a good range of different cuisines from around the world. |
