The area of Gracia was originally an independent village separate from Barcelona, but was engulfed during the expansion of the city in the late 19th century. It reluctantly became part of Barcelona in 1897 amidst much protestation by its residents and has ever after been known as hotbed of radicalism and political activity.Today it is considered a bohemian part of the city; many artists and designers have their workshops and studios here and it is full of independent boutiques, cafes and restaurants.
Entirely different from the somewhat monotonous grid system of Eixample, it is an area of narrow streets, running into lovely open squares with an overall calmer ambience than central parts of Barcelona. It is located at the top of Passeig de Gracia, close to the foot of Parc Güell.

Gracia is famous for its squares and three of the most popular are Plaza del Sol, Plaza de la Virreina and Plaza de Ruis i Taulet. All three are perfect for sitting outside in the summer months and enjoying a coffee, tapas or cocktail; Plaza del Sol is the main focus for late night drinking. In line with its cultural aspirations, Gracia is home to one of the best independent cinemas in the city, the Cine Verdi, located on one of its prettiest streets.
Leafy Calle Verdi is pedestrianised and has many restaurants offering cuisine from around the world, from sushi to Lebanese, as well as internet cafes and trendy clothes shops. The area has its own food market, Mercat de la Llibertat, which has a claim to fame for being the city´s oldest covered market as well as an excellent source for local, fresh products.

The most important week in Gracia´s calendar falls in the middle of August when the district indulges in 7 wild nights of partying, known as the Festa Mayor. In 2007 it will be held from 15-21 August and anyone in Barcelona during that period must make a point of visiting this spectacular festival at least once!25 of the principal streets hold a competition to see which can be most elaborately decorated for the week and it is a far cry from tacking up some strings of bunting.
Underwater kingdoms, overgrown jungles and illuminated dragons are just some of the decorations from previous years and it is a hard won prize to come out on top.Bands fill every square with live international music and drinks and food are available at every turn. The party ends on the final night with devils letting off fireworks, in true Catalan tradition.
