The Fundació Joan Miró was opened in 1975, built by the architect Jesep Lluís Sert. Today the foundation´s collection has around 11,000 pieces: 240 paintings, 175 sculptures, 9 textiles, 4 ceramics, almost all of the graphic works or the artists, and around 8000 drawings. Miró himself donated most of these pieces to the museum. His wife, Pilar Juncosa, donated works from her private collection, as did many other members of the artist´s family. The building is constructed in such a way that natural light is allowed to flow throught the galleries, illuminating the works. Each gallery is purposely sized to view the works in the most suitable way (e.g. pieces best viewed from far away are shown in the larger spaces, and the smaller rooms allow visitors a more intimate viewing of the work).

Since the beginning of the foundation, special attention has been paid to the work of young and experimental artists. These artists have their own exhibition area called Espai 13 (Space 13). Artists are selected by critics outside of the foundation, and displayed in cycles according to the academic year. This method encourages the work of both emerging artists and emerging art critics.
