MACBA is the Museo d´Art Contemporani de Barcelona. This imposing building in the heart of the Raval is dedicated to contemporary art. The building itself is considered a work of art by most people, and like most contemporary art, this can be both a positive and negative thing! Situated in a sunny square in the centre of town, the building is bright white with angular and organic shapes, designed by the architect Richard Meier.
The gallery´s exhibits cover the last 50 years of artistic practice. Earlier pieces include the Spanish expressionists Tapies, Saura and Dubuffet, and Basque sculptors Eduardo Chilida and Jorge Oteiza. Later work, from the past 40 years, has a more global round-up, such as Penk, Beuys and Basquait. The contemporary Spanish collection includes the paintings of Ferran Garcia Sevilla and Miquel Barceló, and the sculptures of Susana Solano and Sergi Aguilar. Many of the most recent displays have a heavy social and political concept.
