Located between the foot of Montjuic and Avenida Paral.lel, Poble Sec is primarily a residential working class district at an easy walking distance to Las Ramblas but is a far less chaotic part of town. The name Poble Sec (´dry town´) is derived from the fact that a fountain was not installed in 1894, bringing great relief to its then impoverished residents. This landmark can still be seen at the bottom of C/Margarit.
Avenida Paral.lel, so named for running precisely along 41˚ 44˚ latitude north, is a busy main road that links the port to Plaza Espanya. Once the centre of Barcelona nightlife and filled with nightclubs and music halls of dubious character, most of the cabarets have now closed down although a few theatres do remain. One of the most famous of these is El Molino (The Windmill), in its heyday as much an attraction as Paris´s Moulin Rouge. Although it has been closed for some years now plans are afoot to start the sails spinning once more and to reopen its doors sometime in 2008.

If you are in Poble Sec the many attractions of Montjuic are close to hand; the Magic Fountains, MNAC, Fundació Miró and the park itself are all vital stops on any trip to Barcelona. Staying in Poble Sec is also particularly handy for business visitors coming to Barcelona for events at the Palau de Congresos or la Fira de Barcelona.
Yet to be completed, one of the most impressive buildings in the area will undoubtedly be the redeveloped Las Arenas bullring found in Plaza España at the end of Avenida Paral.lel. First opened in 1900, the Arabic influenced bullring is being converted into a leisure complex by the world famous English architect Richard Rogers. New plans for a space which was once host to bloody battles between toreros and bulls now include a multiplex cinema, shops, restaurants and even a circular running track. The complex is due to be completed in 2008 and will be sure to attract visitors from all over the city.
