However, for one week of the year Sants is brought to life for its own festival, the Festa Mayor de Sants, which is celebrated around 24th August to coincide with the day of the area’s patron saint, St Bartholomew.Each year about 12 streets compete against each other in a riot of decorations and a variety of performances, many commemorating past events in the history of Sants.
The fiesta is organised by the people in the neighbourhood and past acts have included sardana dances (the national dance of Catalunya), magic shows and live music of every kind with parties running on until the small hours.
The musical acts normally take place in the park of l´Espanya Industrial whose designers seemingly hoped to create an imaginative urban space for the area; the resulting park dominated by large metal towers and awash with concrete is a somewhat mysterious outcome.
