Founded in 1924, Barcelona’s metro system is efficient, clean, and straightforward to use. There are 5 principal lines numbered L1 – L5 plus L11 with stops at regular intervals and it is easy to reach pretty much all of Barcelona’s tourist sights using the metro. There are four rush hours per day, in the morning, around 2pm and 3.30pm (around the 2 hr Spanish lunch-break) and between 7-8pm. The metro runs from 5am-midnight (Mon-Thurs), 5am-2am (Fri, Sat, nights before public holidays) and 6am-midnight (Sunday).
Some platforms entertain waiting travellers with pan-pipe versions of pop classics and during the summer months carriages are air-conditioned.

Single ticket (metro/bus) - €1.25 (valid for any distance within the city)
Travel card T-10 - €6.90 (valid for 10 journeys on metro/buses/FGC/local RENFE)
Travel card T-day - €5.25 (valid on all forms of transport for one day)
Travel card T-mes - €44.35 (unlimited travel for 30 days on all forms of transport – documentation needed for purchase)
Travel card T-50/30 - €28.60 (50 journeys within 30 days on all forms of transport – documentation needed for purchase)
Travel card T-familiar - €42.00 (70 journeys within 30 days, valid for more than one person – documentation of each required at purchase)
Of particular interest to short-term visitors to Barcelona are the following tickets:
Tarjeta 2-dias - €9.60 (unlimited journeys for 2 consecutive days on metro/buses/FGC/local RENFE)
Tarjeta 3-dias - €13.70 (as above but for 3 days)
Tarjeta 4-dias - €17.50 (as above but for 4 days)
Tarjeta 5-dias - €20.80 (as above but for 5 days) |
